Hi girls and boys (girls especially),
This blog post is for all of you who would like to become a Software tester and don’t know how to start. In Poland, where I live it is getting a hot topic nowadays.
I’ll begin with some well known fact – you could argue with me later on if they are correct or not.
Fact #1: To become a software tester – you don’t have to be an engineer.
It is true but not in every case. Being an engineer basically helps to get into IT industry. It is always better to know technical things before you start working somewhere, but it is not a must. The fact is that every job requires certain abilities, which you would gain during the work itself.
On the other hand, it is good to have a degree in anything to start working either as a tester or a developer. It is considered as a plus during every job interview.
I know software testers and developers, who have a degree in English, Chemistry or Biology. I am a Master of Geography. What’s your excuse? 🙂
Fact #2: You can become an IT girl.
When I googled ‘IT girl’ I received not exactly those results that I was looking for. 🙂 What I mean by IT girl – is a person who work in IT industry. Shy might be a hot chick at the same time, but basically is about the work and the knowledge – not a lipstick color.
How to become an IT employee? At first – there is a space for you. Whatever your profession was or is at the moment.
Long time ago there were just tiny offices filled with ugly guys:) Today IT companies have been upgraded to spacious and friendly places – when you could meet people fascinated by new technologies (not all of them are ugly). Don’t worry – even the admins take care about themselves and look less and less like ‘IT crowd’ actors. They might be introvert, but rather nice guys.
Becoming a software tester is a great opportunity to make a change in IT industry. It’s been proven that mixed teams work more efficient and have more innovative ideas than masculine ones. Girls work in NASA – so why not in testing! You should definitely give it a try!
Being an IT Girl is something that you should be proud of! 🙂
Fact #3: You have to gain some knowledge before you start
… And it is true. You might not be an engineer, you might even be a student, but if you want to be a Software Tester – you should know what that means.
How to achieve it? Get yourself a Twitter account and stalk people 🙂 Find testing-related websites and read. Read. Read. And Read once again. Marvelous testers around the world write about testing, give examples, write books and it is all there waiting for you. Make some effort and just look for it. The more you read the more you know. And I don’t mean – learn all ISTQB syllabus by heart – it’s not the point. Get familiar with some technical terms such as “black-box testing”, ‘Bug report’, “test plan”, gather knowledge about testing techniques and methodologies. At the beginning it is likely that you won’t understand much, but don’t give up.
It is also a good idea to attend some local testing groups meetings or meetups. Find them in your city. Go there and talk to people. Ask questions. Maybe testing is not your dream job that you would like to do for 8 hours (or more) every day?
